George Leonard Andrews papers, 1863-1865.

The George Leonard Andrews Papers consist mainly of correspondence from General Andrews to his wife. Five letters, 1863-1865, deal primarily with the 1863 surrender of Port Hudson, Louisiana, and George Andrews' subsequent duties in Port Hudson. His description of the surrender ceremony at Port Hudson includes details of his conversation with Confederate Major General Franklin Gardner. Two other letters describe conditions in New Orleans immediately after the war. Also included are military General Orders No. 1, 1863, regarding General Andrews' assuming command of Port Hudson, and General Orders No. 9, 1864, pertaining to various orders and regulations at Port Hudson.

George Andrews was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, son of Manasseh and Harriet Leonard Andrews. In 1851, Andrews graduated first in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating, he was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of brevet second lieutenant. From 1851 to 1854, he served as assistant to Lt. Col.
